It was a beautiful day for the Fishing Derby! With warm sunny skies, and a light breeze it was a perfect day to enjoy the outdoors and get the fishing gear warmed up for spring.
In the morning, early arrivals may have gotten a glimpse at the Bald Eagles fishing at the lake, along with an Osprey who came around a little later! The park staff and volunteers helped everyone get signed in as well as prepared lunched and helped make sure things ran smoothly.
Families picked their spots around the marina to get ready to start fishing. Children ages 5-15 were allowed to participate. The program helps to get kids and families interested in outdoor activities.
We had a full turnout with just short of 40 fish being caught! It turned out the secret magic bait to use this year were minnows, although fish were caught on other bait as well.
Every time a fish was caught, it was measured and marked. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd largest fish were given special prizes, however EVERY child receive a prize from generous donors including Flambeau.
Prizes included tackle boxes, organizers, fishing poles, tackle, bobbers, fishing line, weights and even instructional fishing DVDs! Hot Dogs were also grilled and served for lunch, it was a great day to be outside and enjoy the beautiful weather.
