Let’s face it, there isn’t much to do in Newbury, OH… or is there? We often forget the treasures right under our noses, and Punderson State Park is one of them. We frequently hear the stories from visitors of years ago about the sled hill, dances at the Sports Chalet, Ice Cream Socials, swimming at the beach and many other activities and how great they were. What made some of these things so memorable? In many cases dedicated volunteers with the financial assistance of sponsors and donors such as the Cleveland family who have helped support the Friends of Punderson over the years.
The park still currently offers an array of activities from boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, camping and has playground facilities as well as basketball and tennis courts, the sled hill, archery range, golf course and now disc (or Frisbee) golf course. Besides the golf course and indoor pool all of these are all available to park guests at no cost.
However, many amenities at the park require dedicated volunteers and funding. What some do not realize is that many of these amenities are made possible by the Friends of Punderson and not necessarily the state park system.
Organizations such as the Geauga Bowmen, Siberian Husky Club of Greater Cleveland, and a number of others have helped make the archery range, dog sled races, nature center and disc golf course, ice cream socials and movie nights at the campground possible over the years.
In addition to keeping these things alive, the Friends of Punderson would also like to bring back some of the events that have faded away as well as bring new ones to the park such as a Haunted Trail during the Fall Festival (Halloween Weekend) and hopefully invite back the Ohio Disc Dogs and the Skyhoundz Competition. However, we need more dedicated community members and volunteers to make things like this possible and to continue on in the future. We have seen that a little hard work and a few helping hands can go a long way.
This summer, we hope to have a dedicated group of individuals on our side to help move forward with many exciting new things and be able to present these accomplishments at our Benefit Dinner and Chinese Auction on November 15th, 2014. Not only do we hope that this event will help reintroduce the Friends of Punderson to the local community, but also honor our supporters and volunteers for their dedication throughout the year.
