2017 Punderson State Park Kids’ Fishing Derby

It’s almost time again for the Kids’ Fishing Derby coming up on Saturday, April 8th! Below is some important information regarding the derby this year. We are also accepting rod/reel combo donations during the event for kids who may not have their own fishing equipment, donations may be new or used as long as they are in working condition. A big thank you to the Ohio Division of Wildlife, Ohio State Parks & Watercraft, Flambeau and Gander Mountain of Mentor to help make this event possible. **Please note there may be more activities available the day of the derby that we will add to the event details once finalized.

UPDATE: Meridith Teehan, our new naturalist will be having a Passport to Fishing Program at the Nature Center during the Fishing Derby beginning at 10:00am. This is great for kids that want to learn more about fishing. This is also something your child can participate in if they do not make it into the Fishing Derby. This program is open to 10 participants.

Don’t forget – kids and adults may fish as long as they wish after the derby has ended. Anyone ages 16 and older will need an Ohio Fishing License which can be purchased online by clicking here: https://oh-web.s3licensing.com/Home/Info

Event Description: This event is held in concurrence with the fish stocking at Punderson State Park. The intentions of this event are to get children interested in fishing and be a positive learning experience for those who attend.

Eligible Participants: Children Ages 15 and Under at the time of the event. **Children ages 16 and over may volunteer at this event. Please contact us at president@friendsofpunderson.com to volunteer.

Registration: Please fill out a form for EACH child you wish to register. If your child is older, and has participated in the derby for SEVERAL YEARS, we are asking that they sign up a friend or family member who hasn’t participated in the derby before to share the experience with them – children “giving up their spot” are welcome to come and help their friend or family member fish and are welcome to a free lunch (there is a section on the form to list the child giving up their spot for someone else, and if they will be attending to help them fish). Registration is limited to 80 participants.

Giveaways: This event is intended to be a non-competitive event. Children will not be given any special award for catching fish, however all registered participants will receive a giveaway at the end of the event. Registering for the event does not guarantee your child will receive anything, your child must attend the event and participate to be eligible.

WEATHER: If you plan on coming, PLEASE COME PREPARED FOR ANY WEATHER CONDITIONS, rain or shine, snow or sleet. Parents are ultimately responsible for deciding whether or not to bring their children to attend. The event will not be rescheduled due to inclement weather.
